What is Tapping?

"Tapping," also known as EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques), is a therapeutic tool that combines ancient Chinese acupressure with modern psychology. Think of it as a physical version of affirmations—you’re literally "tapping" into your body's energy system to dial down the stress response.


How It Works:

The practice involves using your fingertips to tap on nine specific meridian points on your body. While tapping, you focus on a specific issue—a fear, a bad memory, or a physical pain—and pair it with a statement of self-acceptance.


From a biological perspective, tapping is believed to send a calming signal to the amygdala, the part of your brain that handles the "fight or flight" response. By tapping while thinking about a stressor, you’re essentially retraining your brain to realize that you aren't in immediate danger.


Why People Do It:

  • Anxiety & Stress: It’s a quick way to lower cortisol levels.
  • Phobias: Used to desensitize the fear response to specific triggers.
  • Pain Management: Helps reduce the emotional tension that often worsens physical pain.
  • Focus: Many use it to clear "mental fog" before a big meeting or event.

The Basic Tapping Points:

  • Side of Hand: The "Karate Chop" point (where you start).
  • Eyebrow: The inner edge, near the bridge of the nose.
  • Side of Eye: On the bone bordering the outside of the eye.
  • Under Eye: On the bone directly under the pupil.
  • Under Nose: The space between the nose and upper lip.
  • Chin: The crease between the lower lip and chin.
  • Collarbone: Just below the hard ridge of the bone.
  • Under Arm: About four inches below the armpit.
  • Top of Head: Directly in the center.
